Problem & Solution
Damper Warping, Leakage & Airflow Imbalance - Causes & Solutions
Damper warping, leakage, and airflow imbalance undermine process control across cement, steel, and power ducting that can run beyond 1000°C. At that heat the blades and frame distort, abrasive dust erodes the sealing edges, and seals degrade, so the damper no longer shuts off tightly. The result is false air, wasted fan energy, and uneven flow. UGES reinforced, abrasion-resistant dampers hold tight shut-off.

Understanding Damper Warping, Leakage and Airflow Imbalance
Problem Description
Cost of Inaction

Root Causes
Thermal Distortion and Warping
At the high temperatures of kiln, preheater, and flue-gas ducts, blades and frames built without adequate stiffness or thermal allowance distort and warp. The deformed blades no longer match their frame or seats, so the damper jams or fails to close, and the actuator is overloaded trying to move a binding blade.
Seal Degradation and Blade Erosion
Abrasive dust erodes the blade edges and sealing faces while high temperatures degrade standard sealing materials, so the contact that should give tight shut-off is lost. Material also builds up around the seals and prevents the blade from seating, and the combined effect is severe leakage even when the damper is commanded closed.
Actuator Binding and Unbalanced Airflow
As blades warp and seals foul, the actuator and linkage must work against rising friction, leading to sticking, overheating, and loss of accurate positioning. On multi-blade louvre dampers this also means the blades no longer move together, so airflow is distributed unevenly across the duct and the process loses balance.

Engineering Solutions
Reinforced, Thermally Stable Blades and Frames
UGES builds dampers with reinforced blades and frames and correct running clearances so they hold their shape and keep moving freely at high temperature, preventing the distortion and jamming that disable standard units. Stiffened construction matched to the duct temperature keeps the damper operable across its service life.
Abrasion-Resistant Liners and Low-Leakage Seals
UGES fits abrasion-resistant linings and dust-proof, high-temperature seals that resist erosion and keep sealing in dirty service, delivering tight shut-off and minimal false air. Low-leakage designs preserve draught control and cut the fan energy wasted on leaking dampers.
Correctly Sized Actuation and Balanced Design
UGES sizes the actuator and linkage with margin to move the blades reliably even as conditions change, and designs multi-blade dampers so the blades track together for balanced airflow. Combined with accessible seals and liners for service, this keeps the damper sealing and balancing the flow as intended.
